Waste-To-Energy Landfills*

EPA Landfill Methane Outreach Program

EPA is a US Government Agency with the mission is to protect human health and the environment.

LMOP is a voluntary program that works cooperatively with industry stakeholders and waste officials to reduce or avoid methane emissions from landfills. LMOP encourages the recovery and beneficial use of biogas generated from organic municipal solid waste (MSW). Landfill gas (LFG) and other biogas generated from MSW (collectively referred to as biogas) contain methane, a potent greenhouse gas that can be captured and used as a renewable fuel for many end uses including power plants, manufacturing facilities and vehicles.

Americo Full Cycle® floor pads are specially formulated to biodegrade at a much faster rate than conventional floor pads. In addition to significantly increasing the rate of biodegradation*, the by-products created during this process include methane gas (which can be captured and converted into energy where facilities exist). Producing energy from Landfill Gas (LFG) benefits the environment directly by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and indirectly by avoiding the use of fossil fuels.

*ASTM D5511 lab testing showed that up to 92.5% of the biodegradable material in Americo's Full Cycle® floor pad biodegraded in 616 days, as compared to 16.4% of our conventional pads. Such lab tests represent optimal conditions and often show faster results than actual landfill conditions. The actual rate of biodegradation of Americo's Full Cycle® pads and all other plastic materials in landfills will be slower and more variable, dependent upon actual landfill conditions. Test results do not imply that the product will decompose completely. (click to see test results)

End-of-Life Instructions

Locate a landfill near you that captures landfill gas and converts it into energy.*

*Landfills that have gas to energy collection systems are not widely available in certain areas of the United States.

The information from the landfill locator above can also be found on EPA’s website.

California Notice: California law prohibits the sale of plastic packaging and plastic products that are labeled with the terms ‘biodegradable’, ‘degradable’, or ‘decomposable’, or any form of those terms, or that imply in any way that the item will break down, biodegrade, or decompose in a landfill or other environment. These restrictions apply to all sales in or into the State of California, including such sales over the Internet.
